The frequency of head injuries and the long-term effects they can have on rugby players has been very topical in recent months.
A worry statistic has emerged today following research conducted by the Ulster University. The study revealed that one in five schoolboy rugby injuries are head injuries. The study revealed that the most common areas of injury were the head, shoulder and knee overall.
The data was taken from the the 2014/2015 schoolboy season in Northern Ireland, with 426 injuries studied. 204 of these injuries required a month or more spent on the sidelines.
The Irish Times have also revealed that the research also suggested that protective headgear offered little to no protection from head injuries. Is this an issue that needs more attention?
