Wasps Star Could Be Set For Shock Wales Call-Up Thanks To Archaic Law

This is a strange one.

Wasp’s number eight Guy Thompson was said to be very close to a call-up by Eddie Jones for his England squad for the upcoming November international series.

In a strange turn of events, the flanker could be set for a shock call-up to the Wales national side in place of the injured Toby Faletau according to The Rugby Paper, thanks to an archaic law that makes him eligible, despite not having any connection with Wales whatsoever.

Wasps’ coach Dai Young has been quoted as saying “Guy is awaiting confirmation on whether he qualifies for Wales or not” and that the player himself is “keen” to explore the possibility of representing his adoptive country.

The possibility of Thompson playing in for Wales exists because his father was born in Jersey, and that any player with Channel Island ancestry is eligible to play with any of the four home nations..

The last player to take advantage of the law was Budge Pountney, who was eligible to play for Scotland as his grandmother hailed from the islands.

Popular Welsh outlet, Wales Online have come out on record to state that they understand that their is no truth to the rumour and that “Warren Gatland has never heard of him.” So we’ll just have to wait and see how this interesting story pans out.
