The western province have been dealt a blow today with the news that two of the leading contenders for their soon to be vacant head coach role, have ruled themselves out of the running.

Brown will coach the Highlanders for this year’s Super Rugby season, before moving to Japan to assist head coach Jamie Joseph for the next couple of years, bringing him right through up until the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

The former playmaker was questioned by reporters in Japan about being linked to the Connacht role, and said he knew nothing about it, and that he had a contract with Japan.

“That’s the first I’ve heard about it. I am contracted to Japan until after the World Cup in 2019,” said Brown

Former Leinster forwards coach and current Clermont assistant coach Jono Gibbes is said to have been indirectly approached by Connacht, but ruled himself out, stating he is happy in the Top 14, according to reports.
