The Latest On All The Lions’ Injury Concerns

Three down, seven to go.

The Lions are three games into a ten match tour of New Zealand and have been relatively lucky with injuries so far.

Billy Vunipola and Ben Youngs are the only players to have been replaced on tour so far, with the latter pulling out for family reasons and the former revealing he needs the summer off to recover from a longstanding shoulder problem.

Several players have picked up bumps and niggles all the way, but nothing too serious thankfully. We’re at a stage in the tour now where we could see players start to drop off, given the amount of games a lot of them have already played this season.

Jared Payne, Dan Biggar and Sam Warburton have all overcome injuries picked up on tour to take their respective places in the team to face the Highlanders, but there are still a number of concerns in the squad.

Conor Murray (Finger)
The Munster and Ireland nine was included in a matchday squad for the first time against the Crusaders, playing a pivotal role in the win. His shoulder problem is still an area of concern as we saw with some of his passes off his left hand. It’s also been revealed that he dislocated his finger in the game and won’t take part in training tomorrow. He will however likely be fit for the New Zealand Maori game on Saturday.

Jonathan Davies (Concussion)
Came off early in the Crusaders game after a bang to the head. Currently following return to play protocols but is symptom free. Should start against the NZ Maori all going well.

Stuart Hogg (Cheekbone)
Faces an anxious 48 hours after damaging his eye and cheekbone after a freak accident on Saturday. The fullback collided with Conor Murray’s elbow while chasing a kick and was left with a nasty wound and some swelling. Awaiting a specialist’s opinion.

Ross Moriarty (Back)
Suffering from a back spasm since the opening game. Hasn’t taken a huge part in training and is definitely a concern at the moment. If he doesn’t come through for the NZ Maori game, Gatland may look at bringing someone in.

We should know more in the coming days, with Hogg and Moriarty the two main concerns.
