The Kings & Cheetahs May Not Be The Last Teams To Join The PRO14
The rest may follow…
After months of speculation it was finally officially confirmed that two South African franchises will be joining a new and expanded PRO14 this coming season. The two teams in question are the Cheetahs and the Southern Kings.
It’s a move that makes sense for both parties and more importantly a move that works logistically. It’s also a move that may have further implications going forward. South African rugby journalist Craig Ray reckons the likes of the Bulls and the Lions could follow suit
Speaking to Joe Molloy on Tuesday’s Off the Ball he said:
“I think it’s a great move for those two franchises in particular but also for South African rugby because I’ve heard from some good sources that Bulls and the Lions – who are hosting the Super Rugby final on Saturday – they were very interested in jumping ship and going straight into PRO14 or maybe even expanding it to PRO16 so the appetite is there from the South African teams.
Television contracts next come up for negotiation in 2020, meaning if the moves work out successfully, more South African teams could most definitely follow suit.
