Tadhg Furlong Reveals Rory Best’s Rallying Call To Irish Team When They Went Down

Rory Best was born to lead Ireland.

When Australia ran in their third try in twenty minutes on Saturday to take a 21-20 lead it looked like Ireland’s hopes of a famous win were over. Despite taking a 17-0 lead, Ireland found themselves on the defensive for most of the game following a series of injuries to their back-line.

Young Leinster fly-half found himself slotting in a fullback, while Connacht scrumhalf Kieran Marmion ended up plying his trade on the wing. Add in the fact that Simon Zebo was rushed onto the pitch early in the first-half, despite not being full fit and it looked like it was going to be too much for Joe Schmidt’s men.

Rory Best however, was not going to let the game slip away from him and his team, not on his 100th cap. Front-row partner Tadhg Furlong revealed after the game what the Ulsterman said to his team when they fell behind and it looked like they were going to crumble.

“Rory pulled us in and said, Right, next job’. You have to focus on what you can do next. You can’t really wallow in self pity in there and start to panic. You have to get down to basics and that’s kick-off and everyone executing their roles.

“Rory was real calm, there was no panic in there.

“I suppose testament to the man on his 100th cap to play the way he did and have such influence over the team. Especially when changes started coming.”

Thankfully for the captain, his leadership shone through and his rallying call worked as Ireland went on to secure a famous win. Leadership personified.
