Tadhg Furlong Responds To British & Irish Lions Talk In Typically Brilliant Fashion
Tadhg Furlong has truly made his mark on the international stage this month.
The Leinster tighthead has been a revelation for Ireland turning in some absolutely astonishing performances against the likes of New Zealand and Australia. His barbarian like ball-carrying skills and phenomenal work rate have made him an instant hero with fans.
Furlong has been so impressive on this tour that there’s already speculation that he will be on a plane to New Zealand next summer with the British & Irish Lions. His performances have been so good, he’s been pipped to be the starting test tighthead if he keeps going at this rate.
The Times’ Alex Lowe asked Furlong following Ireland’s 27-24 win over the Wallabies, what he has made of all the Lions speculation, and he once again responded in brilliant fashion.
“It’s kind of daunting in a way, to be honest with you. Because you know, in a way, that ‘Jeez, my scrum wasn’t great there’ or ‘My entry wasn’t great and if I do this against a really great scrummaging pack, I’m going to be torn apart here’. Furlong said.
“That is your thought process. And, with people throwing that out, you get kind of embarrassed.
“You know the Lions is synonymous with such a big brand and so many great players have played there. Do I see myself there at the minute? No. I think I have a long journey to go and, as I said, I’ve only started four games for Ireland, two Heineken Cup games for Leinster and it is a big, big step to be making those shouts.”
As modest as they come. Do you think Furlong will make the squad next summer? We certainly wouldn’t bet against it.
