Simon Zebo Released From Irish World Cup Squad On ‘Compassionate Leave’

Simon Zebo has left the Ireland squad on “compassionate leave” but is expected to return to camp tomorrow ahead of the World Cup clash with Italy this weekend.

Zebo was allowed leave the squad this morning after his grand-father John Geary passed away in Cork University Hospital after a short illness.

His funeral mass will take place tomorrow and the 25-year-old has been excused by the Irish management to leave the World Cup base at Guildford.

“Simon has been granted compassionate leave by the tournament and returned to Ireland this morning. He is due back with the squad tomorrow I believe,” a spokesperson said.

Zebo did his case for selection against Italy and France no harm with an all-action display yesterday and had a try ruled out in the first-half when the TMO correctly adjudged that the back had stepped out of touch.

The utility back has scored seven tries in 22 international appearances and was a key part of Joe Schmidt’s side that claimed this year’s Six Nations championship.
