Joe Schmidt doesn’t do predictions.

Ireland boss Joe Schmidt has cited Ireland’s famous win over the All Blacks as a perfect example that anything can happen in the Six Nations, and all predictions should go out the window once the tournament starts.

England and Ireland are the runaway favourites heading into the tournament, with the final round clash between the two expected to be a winner take all affair.

Joe Schmidt however is having none of it, and cites the fact that Ireland were 13-1 outsiders agains the All Blacks in a two horse race.

Favourites’ is a tag that is external to our environment,” said Schmidt.

“We were 13-1 in a two-horse race against the All Blacks. I am not saying they [the pundits] do not get it right sometimes, but things turn up.

“That is why people love sport: you do not know what the outcome is going to be and part of the fun is predicting it.

“We try to go less for prediction and more for preparation.”

No doubt there’s sure to be some surprises over the next few weeks and Joe Schmidt for one knows it.
