Rassie Erasmus On The One Position That Worries Him At Munster This Season

Rassie Erasmus has admitted that he is worried about the lack of depth Munster currently have in the second-row.

The Munster Director of Rugby was speaking after their impressive win over the Cheetahs, which saw the southern province run out 51-18 winners.

Erasmus was very happy with how his side did, despite starting without a number of Lions and Ireland internationals. He said he’s delighted with the depth Munster now have but slightly worried with the stock he has at second-row.

“I think Munster is building a nice squad and there’s healthy competition. Obviously we’re a bit thin at second-row at this stage, which is unfortunate with all the injuries we’ve had.” Erasmus said after the game.

Munster lost Dave Foley and Donnacha Ryan to France in the summer, with new signing Gerbrandt Grobler suffering an unfortunate injury that is expected to keep him out until the new year.

“I think he’s (Grobler) gonna be a while” Erasmus said when asked about the South African’s return date.

In terms of strengthening in that department. Erasmus says they are looking to potentially get someone in.

“I’m looking to sort it out.” Erasmus noted.

While Erasmus stressed they do have the likes of Sean McCarthy who captained his club (Shannon) on Saturday, Sean O’Connor who can also play in the second-row and young Fineen Wycherley, experience will be key when the Champions Cup comes around.

“We’ll look at all those performances, and obviously if the boys here can do the job… But experience is something that will help when we get into the European games so we’ll take some stock and try and make the right decisions”
