Poll: Who Should Be The Next Irish Rugby Captain?
Ireland are out unfortunately but it’s time to move on and start planning for the future.
Paul O’Connell played his final game for Ireland against France and Joe Schmidt now has the task of finding a replacement to take up the towering lock’s captaincy.
Jamie Heaslip has done the job before during the Six Nations and took up the captaincy in the wake of O’Connell’s injury for the Argentina job – is he the man for the job long-term?
The other two obvious choices would be either Munster captain Peter O’Mahony or Ulster hooker Rory Best. Unfortunately O’Mahony’s injury has required extensive surgery and he will face at least six months out, almost certainly ruling him out of the Six Nations. Rory Best has also done the job before and captains Ulster in the PRO12.
We reckon O’Mahony is the man for the job in the long-term but with his injury perhaps Heaslip can do this job for the Six Nations, with O’Mahony handed the job upon his return. Have your say in the poll below.
