Ma’a Nonu Reveals Reasons For Joining Toulon
Ma’a Nonu has finally arrived in France and given his first official press conference.
Having just won the World Cup last month, Ma’a Nonu has finally hung up his All Black shirt after racking up a phenomenal 103 caps for his country. The 33 year old is now looking forward to starting a new adventure with Toulon in the Top 14.
Speaking to the press in a media conference, Nonu had the following to say;
They’ve [Toulon] won the championship three years in row, a lot of good players I’ve played against are playing here and I’m looking forward to playing alongside them.
I come here for a new adventure, this is my home now and I will give my all for Toulon.
Nonu isn’t the first superstar to make the journey from the Southern Hemisphere to the Stade Mayol, and the World Cup winning All Black made reference to a number of former teammates and opponents who had a strong impact on his decision.
I have a very close relationship with Tana Umaga, who was here coaching and playing, Sonny Bill, Chris Masoe I know well, and I spoke to Matt Giteau after the Rugby World Cup final.
They had lots to say about Toulon – the people are really nice and it’s the place to play rugby, the fans are mad about rugby and it’s a really nice lifestyle for the family.
I’ve watched the Top 14 over the years and it’s a great competition, a great style of rugby – similar to New Zealand footy – really passionate fans and one of the best competitions in the world.
Nonu is expected to play his first match for Toulon on December 5 against Agen.
