Former Wales playmaker Jonathan Davies reckons inexperienced referee’s ‘have gone berserk’ imposing the new tackle laws.
A number of yellow cards were handed out this weekend, with Ulster also conceding a penalty try in their loss to Scarlets in the PRO12 as a result of a challenge by number eight Sean Reidy as scrumhalf Aled Davies dove for the line.
The decision to award a penalty try was highly criticised, with Ulster’s Charles Piutau notably venting his frustration on Twitter.
Former union and league star Davies said:
“It’s a brilliant directive but it’s not being refereed properly. They’ve gone to the letter of the law, and it’s gone crazy.
Davies wants referees to adopt a common sense approach, adding:
“You know a high shot, you know a cheap shot, you know a fair shot and referees have got to understand the difference as well.”
Ospreys boss Steve Tandy has also said the new laws are making the game “unreffable”.
