Joe Schmidt’s Decision On Irish Future Is Out Of His Hands
Should Joe Schmidt decide to return to New Zealand when his contract expires 12 months from now, the Ireland head coach will likely do so for personal reasons.
It’s been well documented that Schmidt’s son suffers from a medical condition that may force the Ireland boss to head home at the end of his contract.
“Yeah, for all sorts of reasons. It’s not really my decision to be honest,” he said, before pausing. “I’ve got a young fella struggling at the moment. That’s just the way it is.”
Schmidt has been linked with a host of Super Rugby clubs, including the Hurricanes, as well as being touted as a long term successor to Steve Hansen with the national side. Should he return home, he will leave a lasting legacy with Irish rugby, both with the national side and Leinster.
