Irish Rugby Team Plan To Lift 100 Tonnes For Mental Health

On Friday, November 20, ten men and five women from Greystones Rugby Club will lift 100 tonnes against the clock in aid of the mental health organisation

Ian O’Beirne is a member of the club and came up with the idea. He is doing business and law in DIT and last year he did a project for so it was the charity he chose to support.

The guys will be doing 160 reps of 60kg. Originally the women were to lift 20kg but they wanted to lift 30kg so they will each be doing 100 reps at that weight.

While the training for the challenge is on every Monday, the men and women have rugby training throughout the week and they all use the gym at the club.

‘People were very keen to take part,’ said Ian. He said that they actually have 14 guys and seven women on board in case of any injuries as they are all playing rugby.

The event will take place in the club and start at around 8 p.m. on the evening.

‘Overall the weight will exceed 101 tonnes,’ said Ian.

He said there will be two benches set up, with three women using one bench and two the other, then five men using each bench.

They will time their progress and hope that other clubs will take on the challenge and try to beat their times.
