Irish Coach Says He Would Have Loved A Call-Up For Ireland’s Summer Series

Former Ireland international Geordan Murphy says he would have loved to have gotten the call to join the Irish set-up this summer.

Joe Schmidt has called up Ronan O’Gara, Girvan Dempsey and Felix Jones to assist for their three Tests matches against USA and Japan. O’Gara will assist for the USA leg, while Jones and Dempsey will be involved right the way through.

Murphy has been working in a coaching capacity for Leicester Tigers since retiring from playing in 2013, and feels likes he been overlooked by the Irish set-up as a coach, just like he was as a player.

Murphy says it’s awkward as the RFU don’t want to invest in him as an Irishman, and he’s out of sight from the IRFU while he’s in England.

“Obviously, I stayed with Leicester for a long time as a player. I felt loyal to them and they’ve given me the opportunity to coach. I’m really enjoying that and I want to get better at it.” Murphy said at an eir Sport launch.
“You can never see yourself as being a long-term coach in any one place such is the turnover. This season at Leicester is probably my toughest season in rugby in 20 years. I’ve been trying to get into different environments to get better.”
“I would have loved to go (on summer tour). I’m kind of between two brackets. It’s quite awkward,in England, the RFU don’t want to invest me and progress me because they see me as Irish, but I’m kind of out of sight and out of mind (for Ireland).”
“I might not get the opportunity but I would love to go the whole way. I would love to coach internationally. Like any player, you have ambitions to progress in your job.”
