Ireland Management Make Joey Carbery Leinster Request

The Irish management team want to see Joey Carbery play more game time with Leinster at outhalf.

The talented young playmaker has only just recently made his return to action after a two-month lay-off. Carbery scored two tries on his first start since coming back this past weekend against Edinburgh and looked sharp throughout.

Carbery started that game at ten, but switched to fullback, with Ross Byrne also taking over kicking duties when he came on. He also came on at fullback against Treviso,

“Joey coming back to play is positive and we’re just feeling now that he needs to actually play and get some game time under his belt,” Ireland kicking coach Richie Murphy said.
“Obviously he came on at 15 against Treviso and started at 10 at the weekend but reverted back to 15 within not that long.
“He was in our thinking anyway but we felt the best thing for him was not to come into camp where he would end up doing Monday and Tuesday and possibly end up going back after that,” Murphy added.
“So it was felt the best thing for him was to stay where he was and get some game time under his belt.”
He needs a bit more exposure in that position with his goal kicking. Once he gets that he becomes a viable option again.”

Carbery has been left out of Ireland’s squad this week and is expected to start against the Dragons a Rodney Parade for Leinster this weekend. Whether it be at ten or not, remains to be seen.
