Halfpenny Set To Make Toulon Debut

Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny is looking forward to finally making his debut for Toulon in Sunday’s Top 14 game at Toulouse.

The 25-year-old has suffered a frustrating start to life in the south of France following his summer move from Cardiff Blues and even had to listen to club president Mourad Boujellal threaten to tear up his contract over his injury problems.

But Halfpenny returned to training late last month after overcoming a groin injury and is now set to make his bow for the reigning French and European champions.

“With the injury it’s been frustrating. But we’ve got to the point now where I’m ready to play,” said Halfpenny, who is expected to take over kicking duties for Toulon.

“On Sunday, to put the Toulon jersey on, I’m very excited about it and playing my first game for Toulon.”

“I feel privileged and I can’t wait to take to the field with the team and all the boys here at Toulon.”

Toulon also welcome back South Africa duo Bakkies Botha and Bryan Habana and Argentina’s Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, who have been playing in the Rugby Championship.

France international scrum-half Sebastien Tillous-Borde and hooker Jean-Charles Orioli also return.

Injured wings David Smith, Drew Mitchell drop out of the squad, as does hooker Guilhem Guirado.
