Former All Black playmaker Tony Brown has emerged as the leading contender to replace Pat Lam as Connacht’s director of rugby next season.

Lam is set to depart the western province at the end of the season after making the shock announcement last month that he would be taking the vacant director of rugby role at Premiership strugglers Bristol.

A number of names have been linked with the exciting role in recent weeks, with Clermont Auvergne assistant coach Jono Gibbes said to be in talks with the Irish province earlier this week about the role.

It’s now emerged however that Connacht are exploring the possibility of bringing Tony Brown in. Brown is currently preparing the Otago Highlanders for the Super Rugby season, but has only agreed to undertake the head coach role for 2017.

That means he would be free to take on a role sometime in the summer, depending on how far they progress in the competition. A good choice for Connacht?
