Eddie Jones Reckons He Already Knows Who The Lions Captain Will Be

Changing of the guard.

Eddie Jones reckons he already knows who will be the Lions captain when they head to New Zealand this summer. Dylan Hartley was the frontrunner for a long time, before his recent disciplinary problems virtually ruled him out.

Sam Warburton was also highly touted as the 2017 captain, having led the Lions in Australia to a series win back in 2013. That leaves just Ireland captain Rory Best, who for many is the current number one contender.

Jones doesn’t agree, as he believes his Welsh namesake has recently been given the Wales captaincy for a reason. Warren Gatland is still technically the boss at Wales, despite his current role as Lions head coach, and Jones believes that Alun Wyn Jones being given the Lions captaincy is no coincidence.

“I think the captain has to be a guaranteed selection and the guy who stands out at this stage is Alun Wyn Jones. He’s a hard Test player. I don’t think it’s any coincidence he’s just been made captain of Wales.” Jones said.

When asked does he detect the hand of Warren Gatland in Wales’s switch from Sam Warburton, Jones answer was simple.

“Yeah, probably. The writing’s on the wall there.”

Do you think Alun Wyn Jones will lead the Lions in 2017? Is he the right man for the job?
