Tuesday was meant to be Jones’ first day at his Twickenham desk, but instead he was stuck in Tokyo waiting for the paperwork he needed.

Eddie Jones’ tenure as England coach has got off to a messy start after visa problems prevented him gaining access to the country whose rugby team he has been employed to run.

Jones’ official first day in the role was Tuesday but instead of being behind a desk at Twickenham he was stuck in Tokyo where he was based while in charge of Japan.

Delays in processing the worker’s permit that Jones requires have been the sticking point, with the Japanese embassy not responding to RFU attempts to speed the process up.

Jones was in London on a visitor’s permit a fortnight ago to sign his England contract, but has run into red tape in trying to get the paperwork he needs to return on a more permanent basis.
