Eddie Jones has opened up about Dylan Hartley and his suspension in a telling interview.
The England captain was given a six week ban for a dangerous swinging arm challenge on Leinster’s Sean O’Brien in the Champions Cup, with this latest suspension set to bring his career total to 60 weeks.
Jones himself was at the game to witness his captain getting sent-off, just minutes after entering the fray. The clear look of dismay on his face was caught on camera, with the Australian evidently ashamed of his captain’s behaviour.
Speaking in an interview with the Telegraph, Jones has condemned Hartley for the incident, saying he has let his club and country down. Jones also gave no guarantee that he will captain the side during their Six Nations defence.
Dylan will be more disappointed than anyone about what has happened and he has got to cop the penalty because the World Rugby directive on protecting the head is 100 per cent right.
“He has let down himself, he has let down his club and he has let down his country.
“He is eligible for selection for the Six Nations and it comes down to the case for every selection – we pick the best 23 and if he is in the best 23, then he has a chance to be captain.
This is not the last chance for him but he understands that he can’t behave in the way he did.
Do you think Hartley should remain on as England captain?
