Connacht Sign Irish Centre As They Bid To Combat Injury Crisis

Pat Lam has acted in the wake of his current injury crisis by bringing in a centre.

The western province have brought in Irish centre Tom Farrell from English side, the Bedford Blues. According to a statement from the English Championship outfit, Farrell will return to Ireland and link up with the western province with immediate effect.

Formerly of Lansdowne, Farrell came through the Leinster Academy but left the province last summer to join Bedford. The 23-year-old has represented Ireland at U20 level and made 12 appearances this season for the English side.

Bedford Blues director of rugby Mike Raver said his side did everything they could to keep him, but the chance to move back home was too appealing for the player.

“The timing of Tom’s departure isn’t great to say the least, especially as recently he had started to show glimpses of why we signed him,” said Mike Rayer.

“He has been a really valued member of the squad and has worked incredibly hard this season. I guess that’s why Connacht came calling.

“Despite every effort on our part to keep Tom, the chance to go back to Ireland proved too much of a heartfelt draw for him. We certainly hope it works out for him.”

His arrival will come as a welcome boost, with Connacht down to their bare bones in the back-line after a number of injuries.
