British & Irish Lions Star Set To Be Released By His Club

Leigh Halfpenny is reportedly set to be released by Toulon.

The Lions fullback missed last night’s Top 14 loss to Clermont due to his commitments to Warren Gatland’s squad and it looks like the decision to put the tour first, may have cost him his job.

Halfpenny turned down a dual-contract offer with the WRU and Cardiff Blues earlier in the season due to a disagreement over the length of the deal, with a £750,000 a season offer instead said to be on the table from Toulon.

That deal however never came through in writing, with Halfpenny stating a contract must be signed before he leaves for New Zealand, after becoming increasingly frustrated.

It’s now emerged that he is not going to be offered an extension to his contract by club president Mourad Boudjellal according to the Var-matin newspaper in France. Not the best of timing as the Welsh star makes his first Lions start of the 2017 tour on Wednesday against the Auckland Blues.
