Eddie Jones is set to be confirmed as England ’s new head coach – 62 days on from masterminding the biggest shock in Rugby World Cup history.

Jones, architect of Japan’s astonishing win over South Africa in this year’s tournament, accepted an offer to become the first foreigner to take charge of the Red Rose after meeting RFU kingmaker Ian Ritchie in London on Thursday.

Agreement was reached once Ritchie bought the 55-year-old’s release from Cape Town-based Super Rugby side Stormers for a figure believed to be £350,000.

Barring a last-minute hitch, both England and the Stormers will hold press conferences on Friday.

Stormers are expected to name John Mitchell – who was England forwards coach under Clive Woodward – as replacement for Jones, who was in the first week of a three-year contract.
