Aaron Cruden Turned Down A €1Million Contract With English Club To Sign For Montpellier

It’s not always about the money.

Montpellier owner Mohed Altrad has revealed that summer signing Aaron Cruden rejected an offer from big spending English Championship side Bristol, before moving to France.

The former All Black was offered a whopping €1million-a-season to sign for Bristol, who managed to recruit the like of Ian Madigan, Steven Luatua and head coach Pat Lam over the summer. Instead he chose Montpellier, who are only paying him [cough] €800,000-a-season.

We signed Aaron Cruden because he proved something with the All Blacks. We offered him €800,000 [£715,000] a year. His agent told me Bristol had offered more than €1million, yet he chose to join us. ” Altrad told the Daily Mail.

Not long after Bristol announced the signing of another former All Black in Charles Piutau on €1million-a-season, so it’s not all bad for Bristol fans!

The Ulster fullback is set to link up with Pat Lam and his side next season, likely in the Premiership.
